Card Games

A card game is a form of indoor game that uses playing cards as the main device of the game. Numerous card games are played throughout the world and there are also many related games that use cards as one of the main devices; examples of such games include the poker game. There are some games that are played using traditional decks and have formal standard rules but most card games and their rules vary by country, culture, region and beliefs.

There are games that are not exactly categorized as card games but use cards in some form or the other in their gameplay. Some card games also employ the use of a board. The board in such games mainly functions as a device to mark the position of the player; the secondary uses involve card placement and score keeping.

A card game requires a pack or deck of cards to play. The cards are identical in their sizes and shape. A single card has a front side and a back side. Generally the backs of these cards are all the same, with the fronts having differing marks and signs. In some card games more than a single deck of cards may be used.

Card Games History

Playing cards first surfaced in China in the ninth century during the reign of Tang dynasty. Mentions of the first card game in human history was found in Collection of Miscellanea at Duyang written by Su E, the Tang Dynasty writer during the 9th century. Characters of well-known novels like the Water Margin written during the reign of Ming Dynasty between 14th and 17th centuries were displayed on the faces of cards made during that time. Similar games were also played using wooden or plastic tiles, and Mahjong and Chinese Dominoes were popular games.

Card games
Playing cards entered Europe during the end of the 14th century. During the 1430s, the tarot deck was invented in Italy. Tarot, tarocchi and tarock games are still popular to this day in many parts of Europe. However, most tarot decks sold nowadays are closely associated with fortune telling and they feature esoteric and occult signs and symbols.

Modern deck of playing cards

A modern day deck of playing cards consists of 54 cards. There are four suits; spades, clubs, hearts and diamonds. Each suits has 13 cards; Ace, King, Queen, Jack and the numbered cards from 2 to 10. There are also 2 joker cards which are used in not all but many popular games.
